Offline exams

Run computer-based exams with no internet, using one Windows PC

The Webodhi Exam Hub is a single Windows program that turns any lab PC into a local exam server. Student devices on the same network find it automatically and take the test without internet; the hub stores every submission and uploads the results to Webodhi once the connection is back. No dedicated server hardware is needed.

How an offline exam runs

  1. Before exam day, while online: an admin signs in on the hub PC and downloads the exam to the Exam Hub, and students install or update the Webodhi app on their devices.
  2. On exam day: start the Exam Hub on a Windows PC connected to the campus network.
  3. Students open the installed Webodhi app, choose Offline and sign in with their username. Their device finds the hub automatically on the local network.
  4. Answers are saved on each student's device as they work, and final submissions are stored on the hub.
  5. When the internet is back, the hub uploads the results to Webodhi. Retried uploads never create duplicate results.

What you need

  • A 64-bit Windows PC. The Exam Hub is one program file with nothing else to install.
  • Student devices on the same local network (Wi-Fi or wired) as the hub, with Wi-Fi client isolation turned off.
  • The network must allow TCP port 8000 and local discovery (mDNS, UDP port 5353). The hub announces itself as webodhi-exam.local.
  • One Exam Hub per network.
  • An up-to-date Chrome browser on desktops is recommended.

What needs internet, and when

  • Before the exam: downloading the exam to the hub and installing or updating the student app.
  • During the exam: nothing. The exam runs entirely on the local network.
  • After the exam: uploading results to Webodhi, whenever the connection returns.

Power cuts and crashes

Students' answers are saved on their own devices as they work, and the hub writes exam starts and submissions to disk. Keep the hub PC plugged in and set so it does not sleep during the exam.

Questions and answers

Do we need a server to run offline exams with Webodhi?

No. The Webodhi Exam Hub runs on any 64-bit Windows PC. Student devices on the same local network connect to it automatically.

Do students need internet during an offline exam?

No. Students need the Webodhi app installed beforehand; during the exam everything runs over the local network.

How do offline exam results reach Webodhi?

The Exam Hub uploads results when the internet connection returns. Uploads can be retried safely; they never create duplicate results.

Can offline and online exams use the same tests?

Yes. The same test from your question bank can be conducted online or over the campus network with the Exam Hub.
